Sunny Hill Circle Residence
This project is designed as a retirement home for a Smithsonian Scientist and his wife, who have been living in Panama for the past 26 years. They are interested in an environmentally sustainable home that not only minimizes energy but also serves multiple work/live/play functions. The home has been designed to incorporate:
•Accessory Dwelling Unit
•Woodworking shop
•Quilting studio
•Scientific journal writing library and collections
•Solar PV panels and Ground source heat pump energy systems
•Green roof and Draught tolerant landscape
•Reclaimed materials- exterior wood siding and interior roof decking was salvaged from an old hotel in the Colon area of Panama. The plank species is “cedro amargo”. It is resistant to fungal rot and termites and is strong for its weight. There is a supply of about 3,000 salvaged boards available for sale. The lumber is about 3 inches by 6 inches by 7 feet, priced $1/board foot. It is less expensive to ship and mill the salvaged wood than it is to purchase clear cedar in this country. The wood will be shipped in a container with the family’s furniture and belongings.
