voidHOUSE
voidHOUSE | a prototype for sensible single family growth.
Pressure for greater density and larger homes in our urban single-family neighborhoods has led to an explosion of ill-fitting mega-homes that abandon site integration to achieve status through excess. This new prototype is based on careful site response, sensible sustainability, generous accommodation and the need for contemplative space. A 650sf bungalow is reused/re-envisioned as an accommodating 2200sf family living environment, a house that celebrates life and affirms our need for nature, beauty, diversity and simplicity.
A garden court carefully spans over the roots of the existing fir trees to establish a new living void in the center of the home. The resulting space, with its reclaimed wood decking, affords a permeable surface for the health of the trees and provides an introspective refuge.
Glassy north/south facades are contrasted with carefully fenestrated cast concrete east/west walls to protect privacy and provide thermal mass. The cross section of the house is tuned to promote natural ventilation and celebrate an ever-changing pattern of daylight. The circulation spine celebrates connections to nature, light, and native vegetation and a vegetated roof garden affords contemplative vistas while helping to manage water, improve air quality and insulate the building.
