L2Q dadu
Changing Communities
The L2Q dadu is a prototype of the detached accessory dwelling unit, which has been recently permitted by the city with the hopes of increasing population density in certain Seattle neighborhoods.
Changing Economics
In addition to increased density the DADU is also intended to create more affordable housing options within the city. This 780 square-foot unit provides studio space on the ground floor and an apartment above. Simplicity of form, minimal detailing and the use of inexpensive materials resulted in a construction cost of only $125 per square foot.
Changing Technologies
Alternative materials contributed to the construction of a durable but inexpensive building. Polycarbonate panels were used for the clerestory windows in the studio, reducing cost while providing greater insulation and increased illumination. Factory-second exterior grade paperstone from 100% recycled paper provided an economical exterior rainscreen cladding. Structural insulated roof panels eliminated the need for expensive venting details.
Lasting Solutions
The design allows for flexibility of use that can change as new needs arise. The lower floor is plumbed for a small kitchen and framed for additional windows. It can easily be converted into a living/dining space, with the upper level becoming a dedicated sleeping zone.
